How to add log storage to a SMS on VMware

It turns out that the procedure to add extra (log) storage to a Check Point Management Server (but also Multi-Domain Server, Multi-Domain Logserver and SmartEvent) running on VMware is not known to everyone.

WARNING: Never use the VMware expansion feature!

Check Point describes in sk104848 the Best Practices for Performance Optimization of a Check Point Management Server on VMware ESX Virtual Machine. It is recommended to choose Thick provisioning when creating an (extra) Virtual Disk (thick/lazy is acceptable).

The storage expansion procedure itself is described in sk94671 (including instructions for VMware) and should always be FULLY performed.
